June’s Full Moon on Friday Night Will be Spectacular
On June 21, 2024, the Adirondack Park in New York State will be graced by the celestial presence of the Strawberry Full Moon. This lunar event holds a special significance in both astronomical and cultural contexts, marking the peak of the strawberry harvesting season for various Native American tribes. The Algonquins named this full moon to signify the ripening of wild strawberries abundant during this time of year.
The Adirondack Park’s sprawling wilderness and majestic mountains, pristine lakes, and dense forests provide an awe-inspiring backdrop for experiencing such natural phenomena. The full moon rises majestically as the dark night falls over the park, casting its gentle light over the rugged terrain.
The moon’s golden glow will illuminate the tranquil waters of the Adirondacks’ 3,000 lakes and ponds, offering a mesmerizing reflection of the celestial body above.
The Strawberry Moon will be exceptionally bright because it is close to the Solstice. The Full Moon is opposite the sun in all respects. It rises just as the sun is setting, and it sets when the sun rises. At midnight, when the sun is lowest down, the full moon is highest up.
Because the 2024 June full moon occurs the day after the Solstice (the day the sun is at its highest of the year), this full moon on the 21st is the lowest.
According to the Farmer’s Almanac, it will be the lowest moon in years. Because the moon will rise low in the sky, it will appear bigger than ever. This phenomenon is called the “Moon Illusion.”
