The 2023 Tupper Lake Tinman Race is on Saturday, June 24, at Tupper Lake Municipal Park. This is the 41st year for the event that draws hundreds of racers each year to the Adirondacks to compete in this triathlon.

The Tupper Lake Tinman is one of the oldest competitions of its kind in the USA. It began in 1983 with just 68 competitors and is now a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. In fact, the famous Hawaiian Ironman is only a few years older than Tupper Lake’s Tinman.

Today, the Tinman is actually five different races:

  • Tinman: Swim: 1.2 mile / Bike: 56 mile / Run: 13.1 mile

  • Aquabike: Swim: 1.2 mile / Bike: 56 mile

  • Relay: Swim: 1.2 mile / Bike: 56 mile / Run: 13.1

  • Olympic: Swim: 0.93 mile / Bike: 26 mile / Run: 6.2 mile

  • Sprint: Swim: 0.5 mile / Bike: 12.6 mile / Run: 3.1 mile

Registration closes on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, so visit the Tupper Lake Tinman website for information.

Creating an event for an entire community.

The genesis of the competition was to create an event that could develop roots in the community and become an ongoing, annual tradition. Given that the Tinman is in its 41st year, we’d say “mission accomplished, people of Tupper Lake.”

The race is also an excellent way for visitors to appreciate the stunning natural beauty of the Adirondacks. And, with approximately 700 race participants, the event has become a town-wide affair. Over 400 locals volunteer to support the athletes, which makes Tinman a genuinely unique hometown ADK experience.

The Adirondack Daily Enterprise spoke recently with race director Wendy Peroza who remarked, “Tinman is truly a community event. Volunteers help to assemble race bags, manage aid stations along the route, help with transitions between the swim, bike and run, assist with athlete check-in, provide race-day direction and information and help to ensure that participants are safe when in the water from their kayak and paddle board vantage points. More volunteers are always welcome.”
