Weekend Event Round-Up, May 12-14

It’s Mother’s Day Weekend and the ADK has lots of special things you can do to treat mom right.

Looking for fun stuff to do this weekend in the Adirondacks? We have got you covered. And if you are also looking for a special way to treat your mom (even if it’s just getting you and the kids out of the house so she can relax) here are some ideas.

Plant & Sip Terrarium Class and Wine Tasting in Queensbury, May 12.

The Adirondack Winery and The Planter LLC are hosting a Plant & Sip workshop and wine tasting at the Winery’s Queensbury location.

You will learn how to make a terrarium using succulents while also enjoying samples of seven Adirondack Winery wines.

You and mom can spend some quality time bonding and you can each bring home two wine-glass terrariums as a reminder of your special time together.

Tickets may be purchased online, are just $45 and include the wine-tasting session and two succulent plants in Adirondack Winery glasses.

World Paddling Film Festival in Saranac Lake, May 12

If your mom is an avid paddler, check out the Northern Forest Canoe Trail’s screenings of the World Tour Paddling Film Festival on Friday, May 12.

The Paddling Film Festival has been showcasing the very best paddling films since 2006. Inspire mom to explore rivers, lakes and oceans, push extremes, appreciate wild places and fully embrace the paddling lifestyle.

Treat mom to an opportunity to see the year’s best paddling films showing destinations and adventures in whitewater, canoeing, sea kayaking and SUP.

The screening takes place at Harrietstown Auditorium in Saranac Lake. Tickets are $12 online or $15 at the door. The student rate is $10 (student I.D. required at the door). Showtime is 7:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30.

The event is co-hosted by Adirondack Lakes & Trails Outfitters, along with co-sponsor, NRS

Peek at Adirondack Birds in Lake Placid, May 13.

Birding moms will be crowing with joy to go on a guided bird walk at the Adirondack Mountain Club’s Cascade Welcome Center on Saturday, May 13.

As breeding birds return to the Adirondacks in the spring, it is a great time to start birding. At Cascade Welcome Center, participants will enjoy a pleasant walk on maintained trails through a variety of habitats with an experienced birder, observing many different species and lovely views along the way.

Warblers, thrushes, woodpeckers, and more call these woods and wetlands home. In addition to bird observations, participants will learn how different habitats attract different species of birds.

The bird walk is for all ages and abilities, whether Mom has been birding for years or if it’s her first time. Trips will start with a short introduction at the Center and then head out on the trails. The walk will begin promptly at 7:30 A.M. We hope Mom is an early bird. Mother’s Day ArtMarket at Paul Smiths Sunday, May 14

Celebrate moms everywhere, enjoy waffles with 100% pure ADK maple syrup, and peruse the works of local artisans at the Mother’s Day ArtMarket at Paul Smith’s Visitor Interpretative Center.

Last year’s event was so successful they are serving up waffles and art again this year with their partner Saranac Lake ArtWorks. Join in on the fun on Sunday, May 14, for a yummy breakfast and then peruse locally created art at the ArtWorks Art Market at the VIC.

Artists will be on hand to discuss their work. Grab Mom and come on out for a lovely day at the VIC (you can do your gift shopping before or after breakfast).

Breakfast will be served from 10 am until 1 pm. The art market will be open at least until 2 pm. Please consider purchasing tickets ahead of time if you plan to have breakfast at the event so they can plan accordingly.

Visit Paul Smith’s VIC website for details and reservations for brunch.

And that’s just some ideas for stuff you can do this weekend in the Adirondacks. Check out our Events section or peruse ADKtaste.com to learn more about all the ADK has to offer. Or cruise the EAT section of our site to find a good place to take Mom out to dinner or brunch.
