Check out the northernmost historic covered bridge in N.Y. state, located in the town of Jay.

Located in the town of Jay in Essex County, this stunning covered bridge is roughly 25 to 30 minutes from the village of Lake Placid, as well as the popular Ausable Chasm.

The bridge crosses over the Ausable River and is 160-175 feet long (depending on the source — we’re not getting out our measuring tape), making it one of the longest covered bridges in New York. It was built with a (nerd alert) Howe truss design. The bridge was completed just over 160 years ago by George Burt. There was a prior incarnation of the bridge, but it was lost in the flood of 1856. Over the years, the bridge was damaged several times, with perhaps the biggest catastrophe in 1953 when a heavy truck fell through the bridge.

In 1997, a modern bridge was built nearby, and the road was rerouted around the original bridge. Today, the Jay Covered Bridge is a beautifully restored example of its kind and is open to pedestrians and bicycles.
