The Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society launches its 2025 Winter Speaker Series on January 15 with a program featuring Tony Goodwin, the Town of Keene Historian. The topic is “From Axe Blazes to Highlines.”

Mr. Goodwin will delve into the rich history of the hiking trail network in the Lake Placid area, tracing its development over the past 150 years.

This informative discussion will explore how the techniques for building and maintaining these trails have adapted and improved in response to the growing number of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts over time. The conversation promises to highlight the intricate relationship between nature, trail usage, and the innovations that have fostered sustainable outdoor exploration.

Mr. Goodwin is certainly well-informed about hiking in the Adirondacks. In addition to acting as the Keene Town Historian, Tony Goodwin served as Chief of the Adirondack Mountain Club’s first professional trail crew in 1979.

Goodwin also served as the Executive Director of several Lake Placid local organizations, including the Adirondack Ski Touring Council and the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society. And he has edited five editions of the Adirondack Mountain Club’s High Peaks Trail Guides. So he knows what he’s talking about.

This free program will be held at 7 pm on January 15 at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. It will also be recorded and available on the Historical Society’s YouTube channel after January 15.
