A glimpse into history.
Perched majestically in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains in New York, the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway is a testament to human ingenuity and sacrifice.
As you wind up this scenic route, you're not just embarking on a journey through breathtaking landscapes but also tracing the footsteps of history. The Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway was created after World War I to honor and remember the veterans who served.
Construction started in 1929 with the help of Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt. He wanted to build a road that would make it easy to reach the top of Whiteface Mountain, boost New York State travel and provide outdoor adventure to all.
Workers completed the highway almost 90 years ago, in 1936. It stands as a remarkable feat of engineering, winding its way up the fifth-highest peak in New York State. Its construction provided employment opportunities during the Great Depression while offering a lasting tribute to the veterans serving their country.
Whiteface's Ski Center is also renowned by winter sports enthusiasts. The mountain resort offers the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockie Mountains, making it a unique destination in the Northeast.
Whiteface Mountain gained international fame when it hosted the alpine skiing events during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.
Key facts about the premier Adirondack mountain highway.
Whiteface is the fifth tallest mountain in New York State and one of the 46 High Peaks in the Adirondack region. Hiking Whiteface is around 9 to 10 miles out and back. It takes roughly 6 or 7 hours to complete (it varies by source—and we've never done it).
The highway stretches over 5 miles, features a gradient of up to 8% and boasts numerous hairpin turns. Its construction required blasting rock and installing retaining walls, making it a testament to human perseverance and engineering prowess.
On clear days, the highway provides stunning views of Adirondack State Park, Lake Champlain, Vermont and Canada. Many consider it a photographer's paradise and a haven for nature enthusiasts.
When visitors reach the summit, they are often amazed to find a castle constructed from local stone, a restaurant, and a gift shop. An elevator, carved deep inside the mountain, provides easy access to the top.
However, the summit's most stunning feature is the breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view. If you're in the area, it's a must-visit destination.
Try the gourmet rustic cuisine from the 4610' Grill food truck. And don't forget to stop by the Castle Gift Shop to purchase souvenirs and gifts that will provide lasting memories of your Adirondack vacation.

Respect nature – Remember to leave no trace and respect the natural environment. Dispose of trash properly and refrain from disturbing wildlife. Let's ensure that future generations can continue enjoying the Adirondacks' pristine beauty.
