Durant Days: Celebrating Adirondack History and Culture
One of the iconic symbols of the Adirondacks is the Great Camp, those incredible homes built for the dynastic families of America’s Gilded Age. Designer and developer Willam West Durant is most closely associated with the Adirondack Great Camp.
Each summer, we celebrate Durant Days in the Central Adirondacks to honor William W. Durant's legacy and spotlight the splendor of the Adirondack Great Camps.
It’s a multi-day event that blends history, outdoor activities, and cultural experiences, making it a highlight of the summer season for both locals and visitors.
The many gifts of William West Durant.
William W. Durant, a visionary builder and developer, was pivotal in shaping the Adirondack Great Camp style and culture. Born in 1850 in Brooklyn, NY, Durant was instrumental in creating a unique architectural style that harmonized with the natural landscape of the Adirondacks.
These camps were luxurious retreats for the wealthy, blending rustic elements with opulent features. Durant’s vision emphasized native materials, such as logs and stones, and incorporated expansive porches, large fireplaces, and picturesque views of the surrounding wilderness.
Durant’s most notable creations include Camp Pine Knot, Camp Uncas, and Camp Sagamore. These Great Camps were not just summer homes but sprawling estates with multiple buildings, recreational facilities, and expansive grounds. They became the epitome of Adirondack elegance and set the standard for rustic luxury.
Durant Days Weekend: A tribute to Adirondack history.
Durant Days Weekend is held annually in early August. It primarily centers around Raquette Lake, where many of Durant’s famous camps are located. This multi-day event is a tribute to Durant’s contributions and a celebration of the Adirondack lifestyle.
On Friday, August 2, 2024, the W.W. Durant, a replica of a 19th-century steamboat operated by the Raquette Lake Navigation Company, will embark on a special cruise highlighting the area's history and the legacy of William West Durant. The cruise will stop at St. Williams on Long Point, a church Durant built in 1890 and accessible only by water.
The W.W. Durant will also stop at Camp Pine Knot (only accessible by boat) for a special tour. Pine Knot is regarded as the first Great Camp and is now owned by SUNY Cortland. Due to high public interest in this historic location, Cortland allows a small number of public tours a few times each season.
For more information about the cruise, visit the Raquette Lake Navigation Company website.
On Sunday, August 4, 2024, visit Great Camp Sagamore for a Durant Days guided tour. The tour offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. Durant built Great Camp Sagamore in 1897, and it was the summer home to the Vanderbilt Family for half a century. It’s one of our favorite places to bring visitors to the Adirondacks.
With its pristine waters and scenic beauty, Raquette Lake is the perfect setting for those seeking a more active experience; there are also opportunities for canoeing and kayaking on Raquette Lake. Paddling through the serene waters, participants can immerse themselves in the tranquility of the Adirondacks and get a closer look at the shoreline and wildlife.
Cultural and community events.
The community spirit of Durant Days is evident in the range of cultural events and family-friendly activities. Live music performances featuring local bands and musicians add to the festive atmosphere.
On August 3, Raquette Lake hosts its annual Boat Parade. The community is welcome to enter their vessels and participate in this always entertaining procession around the lake.
The event also includes fireworks displays that light up the night sky, creating a magical ending to the festivities.
On Sunday, August 4, attend the annual Vespers Service with The Reverend Nancy Rosenblum at the Church of the Good Shepherd on St. Hubert’s Isle. William Durant built the church in 1880
Free transport from Village Dock at 2 p.m. Burke’s Marina provides transportation. An offering will be collected for building repairs. Complimentary refreshments will follow the service.
