In the heart of Chestertown, the Rising House was a prime Adirondack destination but saw its last visitor years ago. Once a private home, Joel Rising converted the property to a hotel in1892. It could accommodate up to 75 guests and boasted an expansive double-deck veranda.

Today, its sky-blue paint is peeling, and the double-deck veranda vanished long ago.

In a new exhibit at the Ruplin Art Gallery in the Town of Chester Public Library, artist Stevie Artemis Latham looks past the Rising House’s faded curtains and dusty derelict bar to capture the property's deterioration in photographs, paintings, and installations.

She notes, "I'm working with obscured and reflected layers to reveal the old and new, our ever-changing culture, and nature’s relentless renewal in the Adirondacks."

Like many others, Stevie Artemis Latham can feel like she is "outside looking in." For her, "looking through the locked doors of the Rising House, it's like looking into the fascinating but uneasy world that we try to find our place in."

"I grew up in a small Southern Tier town, played CBGB and Max's with my punk rock band, searched the South for folk art and cooking, was chef-owner of Old Devil Moon in NYC, crusaded for an ‘Urban Oasis’ in Jersey, taught in Harlem, and performed on trapeze,” Stevie recounts of her life before the Adirondacks.

Today, she says she and her partner, Scout, love the Adirondack lifestyle, especially snorkeling and cross-country skiing. Stevie is trans and has two kids.

The exhibit is on view during the month of December during library hours at the Town of Chester Library in Chestertown’s Municipal Center.
