The second film in the Indian Lake Theater’s Dame Maggie Smith movie festival is “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.” This film stars Sandra Bullock, Ellen Burstyn, Fionnula Flanagan, and Maggie Smith.
Siddalee Walker, played by Sandra Bullock, is a renowned playwright from New York City. After being quoted in Time Magazine, she infuriates her dramatic Southern mother. A long-standing conflict ensues until her mother’s friends, who are members of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, kidnap Siddalee and take her back to the South. Their goal is to explain her mother's history and mend the rift between mother and daughter.
This classic Southern tale is a blend of humor and poignant moments, set in a quiet Louisiana parish. The unconventional intervention by a group of lifelong friends helps the playwright uncover the truth about her complicated, eccentric mother, leading her to find forgiveness, acceptance, and ultimately, to let go of her painful past.
