The third film in Indian Lake Theater’s Dame Maggie Smith movie festival is “Quartet” (2012). This film features several beloved actors from British film and theatre, including Sir Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins, and Sir Tom Courtenay, and is directed by Dustin Hoffman.
The story takes place in a home for retired musicians, where the annual concert celebrating composer Giuseppe Verdi's birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean (played by Dame Maggie Smith). Jean, an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents shakes up the group’s dynamics.
Cissy (Collins), Reggie (Courtenay), and Wilf (Connolly) are all living at the retirement home and participate in the concert every year. When Jean arrives, she disrupts their equilibrium. Although she still behaves like a diva, she refuses to sing. However, despite the challenges, the show must go on—and it does.
Critics have praised the movie for its sweet and gentle nature. With Dustin Hoffman’s affectionate direction and the charming performances of the talented cast, “Quartet” is irresistible.
