Indian Lake Theater presents “Anora” by writer, director, and editor Sean Barker. The film won the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.

The film stars Mikey Madison in the title role of Anora, who prefers to be called "Ani." She works as a stripper at a club in Midtown Manhattan and also takes clients on the side as an escort. Ani lives in Brighton Beach, a neighborhood in southern Brooklyn that is primarily populated by Russian and other Eastern European communities, which is reflected in her accent. She speaks some Russian because, as she mentions to a new client at the club, her grandmother never learned English.

Anora gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and marries the son of a Russian oligarch. However, once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as the parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled.

“Anora” is a modern tale filled with strippers and strongmen. It explores the limitations of the American Dream and the invisible barriers that hinder our fantasies of equality, opportunity, and self-improvement. The story delves into themes of wealth and power, examining what love can and cannot overcome. More poignantly, it addresses the heart-wrenching experience of being used to being seen in a certain way, only to unexpectedly feel truly seen for who you are.

This is a movie meant for mature audiences. It is rated R for nudity, sex, a strip club, slapsticky violence, lots of swearing and snorting of drugs.

Movie showtimes are Thursday through Saturday at 7 pm. Sundays at 2 pm with open captions.
