This week’s “Where in the ADK?” comes from Lake Placid, NY, in the Adirondacks Tri-Lakes and High Peaks region. It’s Jack’s Dam on the Chubb River. You may have spotted the dam as you entered Lake Placid. Or, if you dined at one of our favorite restaurants in Lake Placid, Lisa G’s.
The dam was named for and dedicated to John D. “Jack” Berry, a prominent Lake Placid resident who made many contributions to the Town over his lifetime.
A graduate of Lake Placid schools in 1942, Jack served in the U.S. Army during World War II, reaching the rank of corporal and participating in the Battle of the Rhine. He returned to Lake Placid following the war and married. He was involved in various organizations, including the Boy Scouts, the Lake Placid Pee Wee Association, the American Legion, the Lions Club, and the Knights of Columbus.
Jack was a founding member of the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Committee and played a crucial role as the assistant ice hockey chairman. He also served on the village board for nearly three decades, contributing to various community projects such as the refurbishment of Mill Pond and its dam and the rebuilding of McKinley Street and Hillcrest Avenue playgrounds and the village beach. Recognized for his outstanding contributions, Jack was inducted into the Lake Placid Hall of Fame in 1993.
