“Infrared Adirondacks,” a collection of photographs by Phil Gallos, will be the featured show at the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery during the month of February.

The show opens on Friday, February 2, with a reception from 5-7 pm, and The exhibit will run through Sunday, March 3.

Gallos will speak at the gallery on Sunday, February 4 at 3 pm. During the talk, he will discuss his growing interest in infrared photography, explain some of the technical aspects and challenges of the medium, and describe how it fits with his personal aesthetic. Additionally, he will provide background information on some of the images and answer questions from the audience.

According to a recent article in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, Gallos was born in Manhattan in 1948. At age 6, Gallos’ father gifted him his first camera, and he has been taking photographs ever since.

He learned the basics of darkroom technique from Bill McLaughlin Sr. at the Adirondack Daily Enterprise in Saranac Lake, where he worked as a reporter, photographer, and darkroom technician from 1971 to 1976. Gallos studied photography under Helmmo Kinderman at the Lake Placid School of Art for four semesters, from 1975 to 1977. In 2003, he switched from film to digital media.

Gallos told The Daily Enterprise, “For some 15 years, I have been developing a body of photographic work featuring black and white infrared images of the Adirondacks. I call the project ‘Infrared Adirondacks.’ The photos are essentially landscapes but usually include evidence of human presence on the land.”
