Fish Creek

One of our camping crew's agenda destinations was Fish Creek Pond Campground & Day Use Area near Saranac Lake. This campground is a popular spot for ADK campers because of its proximity to the High Peaks region and Tri-Lakes area.

Another attractive feature is that many campsites are directly on the shoreline, with 300+ sites in all, ringing the pristine waters of Fish Creek Pond and Square Pond. Our crew made a special note of how friendly the other campers were and the spirit of camaraderie that pervade the grounds.

Our campsites were mainly level, with sand, dirt, and gravel surfaces. In our opinion, this isn't really a place for big RVs, and no hookups are available, so leave the Winnie at home. Other features include a picnic area, hot showers, flush toilets, a trailer dumping station, firewood sales, boat launch, and boat and canoe rentals. Day-use passes are available, too.

We found a lot to do without ever leaving the campground: fishing, paddling, hiking, biking, swimming, basketball, and volleyball. The campground is pet-friendly as long as they are kept on leashes.

Square Pond and Fish Creek Pond are open to motorboat usage. We noted that the trailered boat launch with a small temporary parking area was pretty active during our visit.

Looking for non-motorized boating opportunities? Check out the ponds in the Rollins Pond Campground area or the nearby St. Regis Canoe Area (approx. 3 miles north of the campground).

Fish Creek Pond Campground is popular, especially on weekends, so make your reservations early through the NYS DEC website. The campground is open from April through October.

Additional attractions nearby include The Wild Center (the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks, a terrific place to visit) in Tupper Lake, The ADK Park Interpretive Center at Paul Smith's, all the Olympic stuff in Lake Placid, and the charming village of Saranac Lake.
