On his own in a strange new country, László settles in Pennsylvania, where the wealthy and prominent industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (also fictional) recognizes László’s talent for design. But power and legacy come at a heavy cost.

Van Buren asks Tóth to construct a community center for him. Initially, Harrison seems to be a supportive patron who appreciates László’s creative talents. However, as the story progresses, a different and more unsettling side of him is revealed, which may resonate as disturbingly accurate to some viewers.

Writing for ABC News, film critic Peter Travers noted, “Brady Corbet’s engulfing masterpiece about an immigrant architect…is the best movie of the year, but it’s also way more than that— an unsentimental; uncompromising thunderbolt of pure cinema that Corbet has built to last.”

Danny Leigh in The Financial Times called The Brutalist “a movie of towering scale, gravity and technical accomplishment.”

Vanity Fair film critic Richard Lawson wrote, “Brody and Pearce vividly manifest Corbet’s arguments about the clash between art and money, between the old world and the new. When they are blazing away on screen together, The Brutalist swells to epic size.”
