Just in time for Valentine’s Day: “When Harry Met Sally”
In 1977, college graduates Harry Burns, played by Billy Crystal, and Sally Albright, portrayed by Meg Ryan, share a contentious car ride from Chicago to New York. During the ride, they argue about whether men and women can ever truly be strictly platonic friends.
Ten years later, Harry and Sally meet again at a bookstore. In the company of their best friends, Jess (Bruno Kirby) and Marie (Carrie Fisher), they attempt to stay friends without sex becoming an issue.
The quintessential Rom-Com.
“When Harry Met Sally” marked the beginning of Nora Ephron’s career in romantic comedies. It also established Meg Ryan as America’s sweetheart and set a standard Hollywood sought to replicate for the next decade.
Released in 1989, “When Harry Met Sally” was notable for its engaging dialogue and charming intelligence. It was groundbreaking at the time and still resonates today.
The film thoughtfully examines the key question posed at the beginning: can (straight) men and women truly be just friends?
Although the strict gender dynamics and Sally's fixation on marriage may feel somewhat outdated in 2025, the film still achieves near-perfect execution within its genre.
Ephron and director Rob Reiner create a magical blend of humor and emotion by combining the quirky sweetness of Ryan’s Sally Albright with the cranky pessimism of Billy Crystal’s Harry Burns. Ephron’s endlessly quotable dialogue enhances this effective formula.
The charming faux-documentary vignettes featuring longtime married couples add depth to the story, while the outstanding supporting performances by Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby further enhance the film.
Rewatching it today serves as a bittersweet reminder of all the on-screen and off-screen talent that is no longer with us. However, we can take comfort in the fact that Nora Ephron’s intelligent wit and the contributions of those who brought it to life will endure forever. After all, who hasn’t quoted the immort line, "I’ll have what she’s having"?
Writing for Rolling Stone, film critic Peter Travers deemed the film “A ravishing, romantic lark brimming over with style, intelligence and flashing wit.”
Movie showtimes are Thursday through Saturday at 7 pm. Sundays at 2 pm with open captions.
