Great Camp Santanoni Winter Weekend in Newcomb
Visit an Adirondack Great Camp in winter. Great Camp Santanoni will host three winter weekends in 2025 when visitors can cross-country ski or snowshoe to go in the Gate Lodge and Main camp buildings. AARCH (Adirondack Architectural Heritage) volunteers will provide interpretive tours.
During President’s Day Weekend, visitors can ski or snowshoe into Santanoni from February 15 to 17. They can explore the Gate Lodge and Main Lodge, view displays about the Great Camp, and take short interpretive tours with Adirondack Architectural Heritage volunteers.
Buildings will be open to the public from 10 am to 3 pm. The event provides a rare opportunity to visit buildings and meet guides during winter.
The 10-mile round trip on gently rolling terrain will take you past the Santanoni Farm and through the Forest Preserve on a wide, old road (no vehicle access).
The Artist’s Studio, a stone building near the main camp on the shores of Newcomb Lake, will be open as a warming hut. Enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, or hot chocolate by the wood stove.
If needed, snowshoes provided by the Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC) will be available for borrowing at the trailhead.
Visitors are encouraged to take the half-mile trail connecting Santanoni Road to the AIC’s 3.6-mile trail system. The center’s buildings will be open on the weekend.
Adirondack Architectural Heritage, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Town of Newcomb, and the Adirondack Interpretive Center host the event.
The Adirondack Interpretive Center will provide snowshoes at the Gate Lodge for visitors without their own.
About Great Camp Santanoni.
The Great Camp’s first buildings were erected in 1892-93, and more were added at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1987, Santanoni was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2000, it was declared a National Historic Landmark.
Great Camp Santanoni is located within the 13,000-acre Santanoni Preserve, established in the 1890s by Robert and Anna Pruyn, a prominent couple from Albany, New York.
Santanoni is one of the earliest of the Great Camps, which the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Morgans, and other Gilded Age giants built in Adirondack Park as lavish wilderness playgrounds.
