The annual Rough Raquette 5K snowshoe race and one-mile fun run/walk is happening on Saturday, February 15. This favorite wintertime event occurs on frozen Raquette Lake, making for a flat out-and-back course.

Snowshoe racers start on the ice approximately ¼ miles from the village of Raquette Lake. They then head toward South Bay and loop back to town.

The 1-mile fun run/walk takes place concurrently and shares the same course with the snowshoers for the first ½ mile.

Organizers advise all racers to allow time to get to the starting area before the race commences. Packet pick-up begins at 8 am on the ice in front of the Raquette Lake Supply. Registration ends at 8:50 am.

Visit the event website or Facebook page for the most current information.

Stick around after the race for Raquette Lake’s annual Winter Carnival.

Plenty of fun is on the agenda for Raquette Lake’s Winter Carnival, which will take place on February 15 and 16. Events include skating, ice golf, the always popular Ladies’ Frying Pan Toss, kid’s activities and games, bonfires and Fireworks at dusk on Saturday.

On Sunday is the annual timed Cross-Cut and Chainsaw competition. Don’t miss it.

Why is it called Rough Raquette?

Raquette Lake derives its name from the French word for "snowshoe." Since weather conditions can be unpredictable and winter varies greatly, the organizers felt the name "Rough Raquette" seemed fitting. All proceeds from the event will support historic preservation efforts at Camp Huntington, also known as Camp Pine Knot, owned by SUNY Cortland.

Camp Pine Knot was the first Great Camp of the Adirondacks. William West Durant, considered the godfather of the Great Camp, constructed it in the mid-1870s. The original log and bark-sided structures have endured well over the years, but they require ongoing maintenance and preservation to ensure they are conserved for future generations.

This event is sponsored by the W.H. Parks Family Environmental and Outdoor Education Center at SUNY Cortland, which manages Camp Huntington.

More information and registration is available online for the Rough Raquette.
