When it comes to the Adirondacks, people think of beautiful mountains, wild forests, miles of rivers, tranquil lakes and ponds, and unlimited hiking trails. But this is where the concept of the vacation was born, so we have plenty of other diversions for visitors to enjoy while they're here.
One of those is an old-fashioned pass time, the drive-in movie. We’re pleased to inform our readers that the ultimate cinematic experience, the American drive-in, is alive and well in the Adirondacks.
If you thought drive-ins were a thing of the past, you might be surprised to learn that there are approximately 321 drive-ins currently operating in the US. The State of New York has 30 active drive-ins (the most in the USA), and five of those theaters are in or very close to the Adirondacks.
This brings us to The Glen Drive-In in Queensbury, just south of Lake George Village. It opened its gates in 1958 and still entertains Adirondackers and visitors every summer.
Operating two screens, the Glen opens at 7 pm, and shows begin at dusk. Arrive and pick your chosen spot. Then, visit the Snack Bar to pick up a variety of snacks and drinks.

One of the most significant improvements to the drive-in experience is eliminating the speaker box guests hung on their car windows. The sound was not super (an understatement) and provided an opening for mosquitos and other bugs to enter your car. Most drive-ins now offer the ability for visitors to listen to the audio through their car’s stereo system.
At The Glen, movie audio is provided with local FM radio broadcasts. For drive-in purists, a few traditional drive-in pole speakers remain for a nice nostalgic touch.
Visit the Glen Drive-In website for current screenings, ticket prices and hours of operation.
And don’t forget to turn your car lights off when the movie starts!
