The stunning Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York may not be the first place that comes to mind when considering skiing destinations. Still, with roughly a dozen ski areas in the Adirondack Park,  the region has become an under-the-radar winter getaway for East Coast ski enthusiasts.

If you’re traveling to the Adirondacks via New York’s I87, one of the first ski areas you will encounter is West Mountain in Queensbury, NY. Offering day and night skiing and snowboarding, tubing, a tuning and rental shop, comfortable amenities, and a rich history, West Mountain makes for a great skiing day trip from Albany, Saratoga and points south of the Adirondacks.

A variety of ski terrain.

While not the largest of the New York State’s ski areas, West Mountain packs a punch with 29 trails, ranging from beginner to expert difficulty, spread over 124 skiable acres. Three chairlifts and three carpet lifts service the ski and tubing areas. The mountain also has snowmaking on 85% of its skiable acres.

West Mountain has a terrain park for snowboarders with rails, jumps, and a half-pipe for shredders of all skill levels to enjoy. The tubing park offers an 850-foot run with a 100-foot vertical drop and 2-3 upper chutes.

One of the perks of West Mountain is its network of lodging partners in nearby Glens Falls and Lake George Village. Both towns offer many options for dinner or an apres ski hot toddy. Or stay in famous Saratoga Springs, a popular destination that draws visitors from across America for restaurants, nightlife and shopping year-round.

West Mountain Ski Area has been in operation for over 60 years. First opened in 1961 with one chairlift and a handful of trails, it has undergone numerous changes and upgrades. The original lodge was replaced by a brand new one in 2008, which features an expanded cafeteria and restaurant.

The amenities have continuously improved, and West Mountain is known for its exemplary customer service. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to help answer any questions you may have.

A local Adirondack skiers’ favorite.

West Mountain has long been a favorite with skiers and boarders because of its close location to Albany. After a day of work, many area residents drive up to West Mountain to take a few night runs and relax on weeknights.
