Because sometimes life in the Adirondacks calls for something more than flannel and Carharrt.

For many of us, life in the ADK requires only two sets of clothing: Summer and Winter. And sometimes, those two climates appear on the same day. We dress for utility – to stay dry, to not be too cold or too hot, and to keep the bugs and blackflies out.

Life, though, has a way of throwing us a curve ball now and then. Perhaps it’s a family wedding or a meaningful celebration. Maybe an important event or solemn occasion requires a wardrobe to match its significance. Or, we get the urge to spruce up and show off a little finery when an old flame appears back in town.

For the ladies, we have many options with the numerous fine boutiques throughout our Adirondack towns. And, if need be, there is always the interweb to help us find suitable attire.

For ADK men, though, it doesn’t seem so easy (are you surprised?). I don’t know about you, but buying a suit or renting a tux online doesn’t sound like a great idea. This is where we found ourselves recently when we had a family wedding to attend, and Papa Bear lacked suitable attire.

Since retirement, he’s been skating along for years with a decent sports coat and nice trousers to get him through various events, but the dress code for this wedding made it clear Papa needed a brand-new suit.

J. Reid offers a large selection of quality menswear.

And that’s where the good folks at J. Reid Menswear in Glens Falls came in. Mama Bear and I poked, prodded, and eventually convinced Papa Bear that he should visit J. Reid. He is stubborn and resists any attempts to get him to go shopping unless it’s for something garden related or at Ocean City Job Lot (Papa Bear loves a deal).

Nevertheless, he was hooked once inside the door of this menswear establishment and haberdashery.

First, Papa loves a hometown institution. Back in the day, he was a loyal customer of Dave’s Squire Shoppe in downtown Schenectady, a wonderful menswear emporium run by several generations of the same family.

Similarly, multiple generations of one family owned J. Reid before it was sold to a long-standing employee, Jeffrey Ives, who has been with the store for over 20 years (according to J. Reid’s website).

Papa Bear immediately felt comfortable at J. Reid, established in 1965, when he learned of their long-standing roots in the area. Read more about their history on their website.

Second, he received excellent service from the staff. They helped him select a beautiful suit and custom-tailored it to his specifications. Papa Bear likes attention to detail and personal service. And this Baby Bear was impressed with how quickly his new duds were ready.

Last but definitely not least, he loved how he looked and felt. He dreaded the experience of shopping for a suit and came away feeling great about it (there’s been talk about a Harris Tweed sport coat) and raving to anyone who will listen about how great J. Reid is.

In addition to suits, J. Reid Menswear offers a selection of men's clothing and accessories. They also have a tuxedo rental business serving the Adirondacks’ Southern Foothills, Lake George region, and beyond. And if you need a good pair of dress shoes, cuff links, or a gorgeous silk necktie, they’ve got you covered.
