It’s Time for the Annual Teddy Roosevelt Weekend in Newcomb
One of America’s most respected Presidents was also a great lover of all things Adirondack.
It’s no secret that Teddy Roosevelt was a great outdoors person and lover of adventure. He visited the Adirondacks frequently.
In fact, it was on a trip here while Roosevelt was Vice President that he learned President McKinley had died after being shot and he would become President. Read more about TR’s midnight ride to the Presidency.
A lifelong defender of the environment.
Theodore Roosevelt vigorously promoted the conservation movement, emphasizing the efficient use of natural resources.
During his brief but memorable term as the 33rd Governor of New York (1899-1900), TR focused policies on NY’s forests and wildlife. He advocated against what he called “the depredations of man,” recurrent forest fires, and worked to strengthen fish and game laws.
Roosevelt’s stewardship of the state’s forests and the Adirondack Park, in particular, led to the country's most progressive conservation and wilderness protection laws. While President, he dramatically expanded the system of national parks and national forests.
