This week, “Where in the ADK?” takes us to Tupper Lake and the Tri-Lakes & High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. This place is a nationally recognized institution that helps visitors see the Adirondacks and our world in new ways.
We ask contestants to name this place in Tupper Lake for a chance to win this week's virtual scavenger hunt.
A year-round destination for exploring and understanding the Adirondack Park.
Originally conceived as the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks in 1998, it officially opened on July 4, 2006. Today, the facility is open year-round. Visitors can tour the 115-acre outdoor campus and its woodland trails or canoe with a guide on the nearby Raquette River.
In 2015, the museum added an elevated trail comprised of a thousand feet of bridges and platforms that rise up and over the forest on the museum’s campus.
In the winter, visitors come to wander through an enchanting, illuminated wonderland. Thousands of lights transform the outdoor campus into a twinkling, family-friendly experience that has become a holiday and winter tradition in the North Country.
This year, USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards named it “Best Science Museum” of 2024, beating out leading institutions such as the Museum of Natural History in New York City, the Exploratorium in San Francisco and the Saint Louis Science Center in Missouri.
The NY Times has called this place in the Adirondacks “stunning,” and The Boston Globe deemed it “The Place to Be.”
Get up close and personal with native animals and plants.
The facility also offers 54,000 square feet of indoor exhibit halls where visitors can meet one of the many animals who call the museum home, explore and learn about climate solutions, or watch one of their many excellent films in their panoramic theater.
This institution is home to more than 900 live Adirondack animals – including otters, porcupines, ravens, snakes and fresh-water fish.
Visitors can experience the thrill of flight through a unique, immersive virtual reality experience. Using a pair of Oculus Rift 3D goggles, visitors can get up on a platform and flap their arms as if they’re actually flying through a series of natural virtual settings.
A commitment to sustainability in the Adirondacks and beyond.
HOK, a world-renowned design, architecture, engineering and planning firm and a leading expert in Green innovation, conceived the museum’s design. The facility’s commitment to sustainability made it the first LEED-certified museum in New York State.
The museum uses wood pellets, a clean energy solution, to heat its buildings. Other sustainable features of the museum are a “green” roof,” a solar hot water system, and a grassy parking lot.
