War Cannon Spirits in Crown Point
Excellent libations with tasty food situated in one of the Adirondacks most historically rich areas.
The Lake Champlain and ADK Coast region of the Adirondacks offers many compelling natural, historical, and culinary delights for visitors.
In recent years, we’ve become more familiar with this stunning part of the Adirondacks for various reasons, chief among them that the area is a half-way spot for us to meet up with our Burlington-based former Lil’ ADKers
For several years, a striking site on Route 9N piqued our curiosity while it was under construction, and we enjoyed watching the location evolve until it finally opened in late 2022 as War Cannon Spirits.
War Cannon Spirits is a distillery, tasting room, restaurant, coffee house, and cocktail bar in a historic building dating back to 1820 when the original structure was a mill.
On a recent Saturday, we met up with the aforementioned VT-based Lil’ ADKers for a terrific lunch. While we hoped to sit on the lovely (dog-friendly) outdoor patio overlooking the picturesque Putnam Creek, the weather had other plans. However, it gave us an excellent opportunity to enjoy the charming ambiance of the spacious tasting room.
First, the hand-crafted cocktails; we relished several creations from their menu of original cocktails made with their spirits, such as the delightful Strawberry Whiskey Smash, Cannon Ball Old Fashioned and Tangerine Creamsicle.
Mama and Papa Bear enjoyed selections from War Cannon’s wine and hand-crafted beer list. There is also an extensive selection of sodas for under-21 Lil’ ADKers.
Lunch options didn’t disappoint. The menu contains great bar snacks for sharing – we had the tasty chicken nachos with black beans, corn, green onions, shredded cheddar, salsa and sour cream.
For mains, we enjoyed the excellent pulled pork sandwich, brisket sandwich, and smoked mac and cheese, accompanied by the diner's choice of various BBQ meats. We only wish our party was larger so we could have tried the flatbread pizzas, mini hotdogs with War Cannon chili sauce, smoked chicken wings and tempting desserts.
Thank goodness they have a full range of espresso and coffee-based drinks that revived us for the ride home.
The setting for War Cannon Sprits, restaurant and tasting room is exceptional. For over 200 years, the property evolved with numerous additions and changes, yet the original structure is still at the site's core.
We love our ADK venues served with a side of history, and War Cannon fits that bill. After all, War Cannon Spirits sits within a stone's throw of many historic sites, some dating back to pre-Revolutionary War times. It’s been a lumber mill, an Agway distributor, a hardware and feed store,
The proprietors’ commitment to creating exceptional spirits and food while preserving the locale's heritage is a fantastic addition to the area.
We were pleased to see the current enterprise mentioned in Conde Nast Travelers Where to Eat, Stay and Play in the Adirondacks.
