The Caldwell House Restaurant in Lake George

Cozy, classic American fare in a log cabin south of Lake George Village.

Do you know the Danish concept of "hygge"? It's all about finding pleasure and comfort in things that are cozy and simple; The Caldwell House has hygge in spades, especially in winter when the big stone fireplace is glowing and the martinis are flowing.

Chef-owned and operated, the stars of their menu are hand-cut steaks and fresh seafood. There are also chicken and pasta dishes and a handful of lighter choices.

Our personal story dates back to several years ago when we stayed in Lake George on a cold, damp November weekend, taking a vacation from cleaning up our vacation home after some long and very drawn-out renovations. Our usual haunts in LG were long ago closed for the season, but we managed to score the last table at 8:30 at the Caldwell House,

I’ll never forget walking through the door and seeing the big slate fireplace ablaze, the china and glassware sparkling in the firelight. Although we weren’t back in our home yet, it felt like we were home.

The classic American menu was a little bit of a throwback to family dinners with our parents and grandparents -- right down to the relish tray, crackers, and homemade cheese spread. Our Papa Bear loves their prime rib, and Mama Bear usually opts for the stuffed scallops, salmon, or chicken piccata. Lighter fare includes salads, sandwiches, and soups. There’s a Lil’ ADKers menu and early bird specials, too.

If you’re looking for the latest in molecular gastronomy or Michelin-starred pretense, fuhgeddaboudit. But if you want a big juicy steak, a slab of prime rib and a baked potato, or scallops stuffed with savory crabmeat, try the Caldwell House.
