Northern Challenge Ice Fishing Derby in Tupper Lake
One of the largest ice fishing tournaments in New York State.
Every year, on the first Saturday of February, anglers from near and far converge on the icy expanse of Tupper Lake for the highly anticipated Northern Challenge Ice Fishing Derby.
This exciting competition centers around the voracious northern pike, notorious opportunistic predators known to eat anything they can fit in their mouths.
The “catch and release” Northern Challenge Ice Fishing Derby is hosted by the Tupper Lake Sportsmen's Club.
Interesting Fact: The award-winning fish caught in 2015 weighed 16.62 lbs. It was released back into the water, so it is still out there, growing, and waiting for you to cast your line.
Anticipation for this year’s event is high as the 2024 Derby had to be canceled.
Competition is fierce for valuable prizes.
The Northern Challenge Derby transforms Simon Pond into a bustling hub filled with over a thousand dedicated fishermen and women, all striving to win a share of more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.
Amidst the breathtaking winter scenery, the atmosphere is electric, making it a captivating spectacle for participants and spectators alike.
Whether you’re an avid angler aiming to secure your place in the winner’s circle or simply a visitor soaking in the vibrant energy, this unforgettable event deserves a spot on your winter calendar.
