“Loons in the Adirondacks” Photography by Gail Danforth
Opening reception for a new exhibit at Chestertown Public Library.
The Town of Chester Public Library’s latest exhibit will feature “Loons in the Adirondacks,” photographs by Gail Danforth. The exhibit reception on September 15th from 3:30-5 pm in the library's Ruplin Gallery will also feature educational materials about loon conservation, behaviors, and natural history. The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation (ACLC) will be providing educational information as a part of the gallery, and they will also be presenting at the reception.
About the artist.
Gail Danforth is a retired social worker who enjoys capturing nature through her camera lens. Her sons’ encouragement to share her work led to her designing jewelry inspired by photographs and the creation of Adirondack PhotoCraft.
While photographing a loon pair on Loon Lake six years ago, she observed what she learned later was a Loon Courtship Dance. The couple were dipping their bills in the water, throwing their heads up to the sky, diving and flapping their wings in unison. Capturing that moment led to a photographic journey of chronicling the pair and their moonlets that season until they migrated in the fall to their winter home.
Her photographs feature the life history of loons, and that background supported the educational component. The partnership between the artist and the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation (ACLC) provides the community with a stunning, rare close-up of natural beauty and knowledge.
