Akwesasne Mohawk Artists and Artisans at the ADKX
The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake hosts a day of performances and presentations.
Come to the Adirondack Experience (ADKX) on beautiful Blue Mountain Lake and meet a variety of Akwesasne Mohawk artists and artisans—from painters to storytellers, basketmakers to beadworkers—and learn more about creative expression and cultural traditions.
Informative and inspiring musical performances and cultural discussions.
The Akwesasne Women Singers will perform at 11 am and 1 pm. The vocalists, also known as Kontiwennenhá:wi, are a cultural group of women from the Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne, New York. The group's name translates to "Carriers of the Words."
The singers include women of multiple generations, such as mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and young women. Their performances feature traditional songs and original compositions in both English and Kanien'kéha (Mohawk).
Ethan Tyo, home culinary, food culture, and traditional foodways educator. He reconnected with his Indigenous culture through a passion for food and now focuses on passing that knowledge on to a broader community and a new generation.
Tyo will present in the ADKX’s garden on the 3 Sisters Garden at 10:30 am, 2 pm, and 3:30 pm the concept of system planting of corn, pole beans, and squash or pumpkins together in hills. Iroquois farmers adapted this ecological planting method to meet the needs of their crops and people.
Planting more than one type of crop together is called interplanting. Although this planting system is not standard in the United States today, it is a well-thought-out growing method used extensively in other countries, such as Mexico.
Interplanting is coming back in favor for some crops because farmers find that extensive crop plantings can have some significant disadvantages, while interplanting has many advantages. For example, interplanted crops are less attractive to pests, while extensive plantings of one crop tend to have more pest problems, among other issues.
Akwesasne artists and artisans display their work.
Numerous artists and artisans will be on hand to share their crafts.
