Where in the ADK? The Olympic Cauldron in Lake Placid.

This week’s “Where in the ADK?” should not have been that hard to guess. It’s the Olympic Cauldron built for the 1980 games in the ADK’s very own Lake Placid. This was the second time the US hosted the games in Lake Placid. The first time was in 1932.

The Olympic spirit still burns brightly in Lake Placid: to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sports practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play.

And that’s the feeling you get when you visit this buzzing community just two hours from Montreal or under five hours from Boston or New York. In addition to its rich Olympic history, world-class winter sports facilities, and proximity to excellent hiking, fishing, and water sports activities, Lake Placid boasts some excellent restaurants, shopping, and leisure pursuits.

Back to the flame, though, it has been relit since the 1980 games, in solidarity with other Winter Games, on the anniversary of the 1980 games, and other times.

The New York Times had a great piece earlier this year on Lake Placid and the Olympic spirit. And check out this site for more Lake Placid Olympic history.
