Star Trek Day is celebrated on September 8th every year, commemorating the day in 1966 when the original Star Trek series first aired on television.

In honor of this epic event, the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour celebrates Star Trek Day on Saturday, September 7, with an appearance by famed author David Gerrold, the creative genius behind the iconic episode, The Trouble with Tribbles.

Mr. Gerrold will give two narrated two-hour tours, the first at 10 am and the second at 2 pm. Purchase your tickets online now.

Tribbles: the scourge of the Milky Way galaxy?

I would never presume to qualify as a Trekkie, but I’ve seen enough episodes of Star Trek to feel confident that "The Trouble with Tribbles" is one of the series' best. Entertainment Weekly ranked #6 of the the 10 essential Star Trek original series episodes.

The first “Tribbles” appear is in the fifteenth episode of the second season of the original Star Trek series. David Gerrold wrote the episode, which was directed by Joseph Pevney. It was first broadcast on December 29, 1967 (fatefully, my birthday).

Who wouldn’t love a Tribble?

In this gloriously amusing episode, the starship Enterprise visits Deep Space Station K7 and soon becomes overwhelmed by rapidly reproducing small furry creatures, forever known as "Tribbles,” and hilarity ensues.

As a youngster, I loved Star Trek's adventurous and exploratory aspects: the mission of the Starship Enterprise, with its famously split infinitive was “to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Even then, my young mind valued the focus on exploring new worlds and encountering different alien civilizations with a diplomatic and optimistic outlook.

But something about the Tribbles made Star Trek more accessible to me. I loved the furry, slow-moving, cute and cooing creatures. I immediately wanted one of my own (which probably led to a pre-teen obsession with guinea pigs).

The Tribbles are eventually revealed to be a scourge, and without revealing too much of the plot, are dealt with by Chief Engineer Scott (aka - Scotty), who declares at the end of the episode in one of television’s greatest puns, "they'll be no tribble at all."

Meet Tribbles’ creator in Ticonderoga.

James Cawley, founder of the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour in Ticonderoga, and his team recently announced famed author David Gerrold’s appearance in Ticonderoga, doing tours, signing autographs, and greeting fans on September 7, 2024.

This is an excellent opportunity to tour the Enterprise with someone who was there when it all began – and bring a Tribble home.
