“North Woods” by Daniel Mason
Join Champlain Area Trail’s Conservation Book Club for their March discussion.
Champlain Area Trail’s (CAT’s) Book Club discusses "North Woods" by Daniel Mason. This is a remarkable novel that revolves around a solitary house located in the woods of New England. It is told through the life stories of those who have lived in it throughout the centuries.
The story is a daring and moving tale that explores the themes of memory and destiny. The author, Daniel Mason, is a Pulitzer Prize finalist who is also known for his other works, such as “The Piano Tuner” and “The Winter Soldier.”
"North Woods" is a novel that explores how we are connected to our environment and to each other through cycles of history, nature, and literature. It is divided into twelve chapters based on the seasons, and it takes the reader on a journey through time and space.
The book is about secrets and fates, and it asks a timeless question: how do we live on, even after we have passed away? This unforgettable novel is a beautiful tribute to the natural world and the bonds that unite us.
The San Francisco Chronicle said of the novel, “With the expansiveness and immersive feeling of two-time Booker Prize nominee David Mitchell’s fiction (‘Cloud Atlas’), the wicked creepiness of Edgar Allan Poe, and Mason’s bone-deep knowledge of and appreciation for the natural world that’s on par with that of Thoreau, ‘North Woods’ fires on all cylinders.”
The book club meets in person at the Westport Library at 6 Harris Ln, Westport, NY 12993. Visit the CAT’s website for more information, including how to attend by Zoom.
The CAT’s Conservation Book Club meets once a month for discussion and conversation. They read books mainly focused on conservation, environmental issues, ecology, and our overall relationship with land.
