“God Save Benedict Arnold” Author Jack Kelly to Discuss Book in Lake George
Historian and author Jack Kelly will be in Lake George on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, to discuss his latest work, “God Save Benedict Arnold: The True Story of America’s Most Hated Man.” The event, sponsored by the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance, will be held at the Holiday Inn in Lake George Village at 11 am in The Prospect Room.
For over two centuries, Benedict Arnold has been known to most Americans as a traitor. However, Arnold was much more than that. During the early years of the Revolutionary War, he was the most successful soldier of the era. "God Save Benedict Arnold: The True Story of America's Most Hated Man" tells the story of Arnold's brave feats, including his capture of Fort Ticonderoga, his expedition to attack Quebec, the famous artillery brawl at Valcour Island, and the turning-point battle at Saratoga. These achievements laid the groundwork for America's independence.
Arnold was a brilliant tactician, a superb leader, and a supremely courageous military officer. He was also an imperfect, disloyal, and villainous character. He is one of the most paradoxical and interesting figures in American history.
Jack Kelly's book does not excuse Arnold's treason, as the stain on his character is permanent. However, Kelly's insightful exploration of Arnold's career as a warrior sheds new light on this gutsy, fearless, and enigmatic figure.
According to Kelly, Arnold never did anything halfway. When Arnold “fought, he did so with ingenuity, intensity and an almost reckless willingness to risk his own life. When he had a change of heart, he betrayed his country and his comrades in a manner that blackened his name forever.” The book offers a fresh perspective on the reasons for Arnold's momentous change of heart.
“God Save Benedict Arnold” is scheduled for release by St. Martin’s Press on December 5. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing at the Lake George event. Due to space limitations, those planning to attend are encouraged to reserve a seat in advance by emailing the Alliance at info@lakegeorgebattlefield.org.
