Where in the ADK Wednesday: Massawepie Trail
A beautiful hike through the pines, past lakes and ponds, and across marshes and mires.
This week’s “Where in the ADK?” is from Massawepie Mire, the largest peatland bog in the state of New York. It is one of the most popular spots for birding in the ADK because it offers a variety of habitats – lakes, forests, ponds, marshes, brooks, etc. – for the little winged creatures to make their homes in.
The 5.6-mile out-and-back Massawepie Trail is roughly 15 miles from the town of Tupper Lake and makes an excellent excursion for hikers of any level. The trail is relatively flat and includes wooden boardwalks and bridges over the marshy wet bits. Other ecological or unique geographical features of the trail are the eskers along the path. What’s an esker? Eskers are long, winding ridges made of sands and gravels, deposited by glacial meltwater flowing through tunnels within and underneath glaciers, or through meltwater channels on top of glaciers. The trail takes hikers over the tops of the eskers.
