Long Lake Winter Birding Weekend With Joan Collins

Join an acclaimed Adirondack avian guide for winter birding adventures in the Adirondacks.

A tufted titmouse, a frequent adirondack birding target.

The Tufted Titmouse, an Adirondack birding favorite and delightful songbird.

Enjoy a weekend of birding in the Adirondacks this winter. Participants will search for winter irruptive species (birds that regularly migrate), including Bohemian Waxwings, as well as winter finch species such as Red Crossbills, White-winged Crossbills, Pine Siskins, and Evening Grosbeaks.

This winter birding event is an excellent opportunity to spot year-round boreal residents such as Ruffed Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Canada Jay, and boreal chickadee.

Food sources are plentiful due to abundant fruit; many conifer species have excellent cone crops this year. Adirondack birders report that Red Crossbills nested in late summer, and they expect them to nest again this winter. White-winged Crossbills and Pine Siskins are also migrating into the area.

Joan Collins will lead field trips on January 25 and 26. The group will meet outside the Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake at 7 am (near the bridge over Long Lake on Route 30).

On Saturday evening, there will also be dinner at the Adirondack Hotel dining room at 6 pm.

Registration is required to attend the birding trips. Contact Joan Collins to register at JoanCollins@ADKAvian.com or 315-244-7127.

There is a maximum of 20 participants for each field trip.

The Winter Birding Weekend is sponsored by the Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department and cosponsored by Northern New York Audubon.
