About Great Camp Sagamore.
Historians often highlight Camp Sagamore as the quintessential example of a Great Camp. Its unique architectural style harmonizes with the natural beauty of the Adirondacks.
Established in 1897 by the innovative designer William West Durant, this magnificent retreat sprawls across 1,526 acres of pristine wilderness. It offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Camp Sagamore served as a cherished wilderness sanctuary for the Vanderbilt family, who enjoyed its rich surroundings and tranquil ambiance for over fifty years.
Today, this remarkable site is recognized as a historic landmark. It is thoughtfully managed by a non-profit educational institution, preserving its legacy as a public trust for future generations to explore and appreciate.
Sagamore was first listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It was then designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2000.*
On January 25, visit Sagamore to experience winter life during the Gilded Age at this former Vanderbilt property.
*A National Historic Landmark (NHL) is a building, district, object, site, or structure the United States government officially recognizes for its outstanding historical significance. Only some 2,500, or roughly three percent, of over 90,000 places listed on the country's National Register of Historic Places are recognized as National Historic Landmarks.
