Dog Days in the Adirondacks

Enjoy a pet-friendly stay in the ADK.

ADK Dog in the High Peaks

People love the Adirondacks for the incredibly diverse range of experiences they can find here. They also value that it’s a place for families to visit where everyone can find something they enjoy to create special memories.

We believe that also extends to the critters in our lives, especially our ADK fur babies – although we’re sure your goldfish, cockatoo, or lizard would also be welcome.

Contemplating a trip to the ADK with your canine or other companions? Here are a few tips that might be helpful.

Be in the know before you go.

One of our favorite websites for traveling with your pup is BringFido.com. They make planning any dog-friendly trip a breeze.

BringFido’s database of over 500,000 pup-approved restaurants, dog parks, hiking trails and shopping destinations means you’ll know where your pet is welcome.

Download their app before you go so pet parents can rest easy knowing that BringFido’s directory of licensed veterinarians, sitters, and groomers is just a tap away.

Dining with your doggie Adirondack-style.

First, let’s remember this isn’t Paris; in accordance with New York State law, your dog will not see the inside of any public dining room in the Empire State. As for al fresco dining, dogs are allowed in outside dining spaces only if the restauranteur complies with Section 1352-e of Public Health Law.

The good news is visitors can find plenty of dog-friendly spots in the Adirondacks with outdoor dining that will gladly welcome your cherished beast, as long as pets are leashed and under your control at all times.

A few of our favorites include:

Paradox Brewery – Scrhoon Lake. Paradox has a large pavilion and outdoor space with tables, games, and extra seating. They serve food and award-winning beverages and often have live music.

Lisa J’s – Lake Placid. We are fans of this attractive, welcoming establishment in Lake Placid with delicious food. Dogs are welcome on their lovely deck and patio overlooking Jack’s Dam.

The Huddle Kitchen & Bar – Bolton Landing. The Huddle's patio is dog-friendly in the heart of charming Bolton Landing. Grab a table with an umbrella and enjoy some dynamite food and beverages. They are open 7 days a week in the summer for lunch and dinner and have a fantastic brunch on weekends.

Raquette River Brewing – Tupper Lake. Another great brewery in the ADK, this spot has an expansive outdoor space. Visitors can enjoy one of Raquette River’s outstanding craft beverages and avail themselves of the dining options from several food trucks that are usually onsite.

Left Bank Cafe – Saranac Lake. A delicious slice of Paris in Saranac Lake, Left Bank Cafe will welcome your petit chien on their patio.

becks TAVERN – North Creek. Enjoy some schnitzel with your Schnauzer at becks TAVERN near Gore Mountain. Their enormous lawn with ample outdoor seating is the perfect place for you and your pet to enjoy a meal of German-inspired fare along with American classics. They regularly have live music on their outdoor stage. And check out their Yurts.

These are just a few of our ADK Taste’s restaurant listings that indicate if a place has a dog-friendly patio. But we urge you to contact the restaurant directly to ensure Fido will be welcome.

You and your furry companion have a wide range of accommodations in the ADK.
Perhaps the preeminent crash pad for pampered pups is The Point on Upper Saranac Lake. This former Rockefeller estate caters to every whim of its human guests, and canine companions also get white glove service, including treats, toys, luxurious dog beds, serveware, and even life jackets for water adventures.

Pets are also welcome at some of our favorite lodging destinations, including:

This is just a handful of the pet-friendly accommodations in the Adirondacks. Do your research to find the right place for you and your buddy, from camping to glamping to charming inns. On ADKtaste.com, we try to tag all pet-friendly establishments.

And don’t forget to bring your pup’s bed and a few favorite toys to make them feel comfortable in a new location.

For dog-friendly activities in the Adirondack Park, follow these principles.

Most trails and outdoor activities are pet-friendly. It’s essential to keep the following in mind:

  • Know the leash laws. Most, if not all, trails say that dogs must be leashed.

  • Clean up after your dogs.

  • Check for ticks on your dog and yourself.

  • If the weather calls for it, bring a jacket and dog boots.

  • Bring plenty of water and snacks.

  • Wear bright colors during hunting season.

  • Leave the wildlife alone, and leave no trace.
