Taylor Haskins Marks the Winter Solstice at Westport’s The Mill

As lifelong Unitarians, the Winter Solstice has held special meaning for us. Sure, science tells us it’s when the earth’s poles reach maximum tilt away from the sun. It’s also commonly known as the shortest day of the year.

However, cultures have celebrated the solstice since the Stone Age, holding feasts and holidays. Fire and light are traditional symbols of celebrations held on the year's darkest day.

Neolithic structures like Newgrange in Ireland were built to align with the winter solstice sunrise. Other ancient monuments, like Stonehenge, Cahokia Woodhenge, and Ahu Tongariki, also align with the winter solstice.

We threw mittens at a Christmas tree at our Unitarian celebration, but that’s another story.

The Mill in Westport, NY, will mark the solstice with a performance by Taylor Haskins. Hailed by Downbeat magazine for his “adroit lyricism and gift for complex, imaginative composition,” Haskins is a composer, trumpeter, and synthesist who has distinguished himself as a leader of groundbreaking ensembles, as well as a venturesome composer and producer of soundtracks for film and television.

Haskins’ most recent albums include the hard-hitting progressive opus Interstellar Phoenix, the plaintive and evocative ambiance of Solo Solstice, the jazz-electronica hybrid Gnosis and the disarmingly melodic The Point by a quintet called ‘Green Empire’, which features Haskins exclusively on the rare Steiner-Crumar analog EVI (electronic valve instrument).
