“True West” Staged Play Reading in Westport
Sam Shepard’s play is a cornerstone of modern American theater.
San Gabriel Valley in California is the setting for Sam Shepard’s masterpiece, “TRUE WEST.”
The Depot Theatre and the Westport Wadhams Community Alliance will present a staged play reading of “True West,” the acclaimed play by Sam Shepard, on Sunday, April 13, at 3 pm at the Westport Heritage House.
Saranac Lake-based Adirondack Stage Rats produce the reading.

A darkly comedic exploration of the American dream, sibling rivalry, and the nature of identity, “True West” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1983.
“True West” follows the sibling rivalry of estranged brothers, Lee and Austin, who are reunited in their mother's suburban California home. The brothers' relationship becomes increasingly volatile as they confront their failures and resentments.

The play culminates in a chaotic and violent confrontation between the brothers, leaving the audience to contemplate the destructive forces at play within the brothers’ relationship and the nature of their identities.

New York magazine described Shepard as "the greatest American playwright of his generation". He is widely considered one of the most important and influential playwrights of the 20th Century, known for his bleak, poetic, and surrealist plays that explored the darker side of American family life and the American West.
He wrote 58 plays and several books of short stories, essays, and memoirs. He won 10 Obie Awards for writing and directing, the most by any writer or director. In 1979, Shepard received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play “Buried Child.”
He was also an accomplished actor, known for his roles in “Days of Heaven,” “The Right Stuff,” and “Steel Magnolias.”
