Adirondack Loon Zoom Series: 25 Years of Loon Conservation Studies
Join Lucas Savoy from the Biodiversity Research Institute for a discussion on loon protection.
On Thursday, January 18, at 7 pm (ET), join Lucas Savoy of the Biodiversity Research Institute as he discusses insights, observations and conservation of the common loon.
Lucas is a wildlife biologist who works with BRI, a conservation organization based in Maine. He has been involved in collaborative loon projects across North America and other regions worldwide for over 25 years.
As a young boy, Lucas was fascinated with loons while spending time with them on his family's annual fishing trips to northern Maine. In his professional career, he has spent over two decades studying loons, which have taken him across the boreal forest regions of the United States, Canada, and even Arctic Russia.
Lucas dedicated many summers to studying loons, often sacrificing sleep and spending countless hours on the water. His research has focused on identifying emerging threats to loons, including environmental contamination, disease, oil spills, and climate change.
He has also utilized technology and field data to map the migration routes of loons from their breeding lakes to their wintering areas in the ocean.
Decades of loon field studies across North America have provided valuable insights into loon natural history and helped focus project efforts and goals for loon conservation.
