Celebrate the Common Loon at Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center
The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation has planned a fun, informative day honoring the fascinating ADK icon.
Celebrate the enchanting Common Loon, a symbol of Adirondack wildlife, with the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation. On October 8th, from 1 to 4:30 pm, at the Paul Smith’s College VIC, experience a day filled with excitement for the whole family. We welcome you to be a part of this unforgettable event open to the public and promises to be worth your time.
A guided paddle on Lake Clear to observe loons.
Participants will be able to discover the fascinating existence of loons that migrate to the Adirondacks each year to mate and raise their young, alongside the conservation challenges that affect both loons and the aquatic ecosystems they inhabit. This event will be held in a small-group format that encourages social distancing.
This field trip is limited to 10 participants only. Space is sold out at this writing, but they are maintaining a waitlist. Visit the event website for more information and to add your name to the list.
Organizers have assembled a full slate of lively, informative and enjoyable activities.
From 1 to 4:30 pm on Sunday, October 8, Paul Smith’s VIC will be “Loon-a-palooza” in the ADK. The event is FREE and open to the public. Food and beverages from local purveyors will be available for purchase.

Adirondack Loon Center staff will be on hand to share interesting information on their Adirondack loon research and conservation programs
Savor delicious food from Chef Humble, focused on seasonal and ADK-inspired creations
Hex and Hop will be on hand selling their tasty brews
Bid in a silent auction featuring beautiful loon-related items
Lil’ ADKers can take part in crafts, games, and activities
Don’t miss the scavenger Hunt
Acoustic folk duo Blessid Dirt, will perform their "heavy folk with some wicked good guitar pickn'“ “from 1 to 2 pm
Dr. Mark Pokras, Tufts University: “Loon CSI: Why Loons Die,” which, to be honest, doesn’t sound that uplifting, but he is the leading research on loon mortality and lead poisoning, which is no laughing matter.
Loon-Friendly Lakes and Lead-Tackle Buy-Back retailers receive recognition at 3:30 pm
The Loon Calling Contest happens at 3:30 pm. Come with your best wails, tremolos, hoots, and yodels and win a prize
The VIC will host Interpretive walk stations along the Heron Marsh Trail
Stick around for the Hornbeck Canoe raffle drawing at 4:30 pm
