Where in the ADK? Cooper’s Cave

This week’s “Where in the ADK?” is the inspiration for the great American novel and movie “The Last of the Mohicans,” just south of Lake George Village in Glens Falls, NY.

In the City of Glens Falls in the southern foothills of the ADKs, visitors can glimpse Cooper's Cave, a crucial source of inspiration for James Fenimore Cooper's "Last of the Mohicans."

In the early 19th century, Europeans considered the Adirondacks a vast, inhospitable wilderness. Yet, in 1825, James Fenimore Cooper led a group of gentlemen into the southern ADK wilds to partake of the area's majesty. When they crossed over the Hudson at Glens Falls, he was gobsmacked by the scenery, particularly a cave beneath a waterfall where he would later stage a pivotal scene in The Last of the Mohicans.
