Adirondack Ski Season Begins This week
Two of the Adirondack Park’s biggest ski areas are now open, and others aren’t far behind.
When the days get shorter, the air turns frosty, and the first snowflakes start flying, we turn our attention to the upcoming ski season in the Adirondack Mountains. This region is synonymous with pristine slopes, legendary winter sporting events, and spectacular vistas and scenery.
The Adirondacks have some of the tallest peaks in the eastern US, rising as high as 5,300 feet, which provides ample opportunity for top-notch skiing and snowboarding. With an average annual snowfall of 150 inches or more in higher elevations, it is no wonder that winter sports enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the opening of ski season in the Adirondack Mountains every year.
With some of the Adirondack Park’s top ski destinations opening this week, now is the time to start planning your winter vacation in the ADK.
Whiteface Mountain, Wilmington, NY – Open now.
Whiteface Mountain, located just 20 miles from Lake Placid, is known as the Olympic Mountain, having hosted two Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980. Over the last 10 years, Whiteface’s annual snowfall average is 183”.
The mountain boasts the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies and is known for its challenging terrain and the incredible views of the surrounding mountains. Whiteface Mountain ski area offers 299 skiable acres on three peaks, an elevation of 4,800 feet, and 94 ski trails for all levels of skiing. And that doesn’t include 35 acres of in-bounds, off-piste double black diamond wilderness terrain skiing.
Gore Mountain, North Creek, NY – Opening day Saturday, Nov 25, 2023.
Cradled in the heart of the Adirondacks, Gore Mountain offers a perfect blend of challenging trails and family-friendly slopes. The mountain's extensive trail system ensures there's something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned experts.
Gore is a popular destination for skiers, snowboarders, and other winter sports enthusiasts. It has over 453 acres of skiable terrain and over 110 trails, including 108 Alpine trails, 28 glades and 7 Freestyle areas covering 43 miles. Add to that seven cross-country/snowshoe loops; you’ve got the perfect storm for outdoor winter fun.
The mountain boasts 14 lifts, including an 8-person Gondola, snowmaking on 97% of the mountain, and a 20-year average of 125” of snow per year.
West Mountain, Queensbury, NY – Opening day is scheduled for Dec 16, 2023.
West Mountain is conveniently located in the Southern Adirondacks, between Saratoga Springs and historic Glens Falls in New York. The resort offers skiing, riding, and tubing, with beginner through advanced terrain available for day and nighttime use.
There are two triple chairs, one quad chair, and three carpet lifts. The resort boasts 31 skiing trails for all abilities, spanning over 124 acres, including ungroomed glade skiing, freestyle terrain, and a large tubing park.
Titus Mountain, Malone, NY – Expected opening December 16, 2023.
Titus Mountain spans three mountains, providing 380 acres of skiable terrain, including 50 trails and glades, three terrain parks, and eight lifts. With an average annual snowfall of 150 inches, Titus is a perfect location for skiers and riders of all levels. Additionally, you can enjoy night skiing and snow tubing at Titus Mountain.
The resort caters to families, offering two lodges, ski-in/ski-out rental properties, private heated slope-side "skibanas," and a wide range of amenities to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
Oak Mountain, Speculator, NY. — Projected opening December 15, 2023.
Oak Mountain, located in the Central Adirondacks, offers 230 acres of terrain that can be accessed by skiers and riders on the 2,400-foot mountain with a 650-foot vertical drop.
The resort features 22 alpine trails that are serviced by one quad and two T-bars. For those who enjoy freestyle skiing, there is a terrain park with 22 features.
Non-skiers can try snowshoeing or tubing for entertainment.
