Learn More About the History of Saranac Lake’s Winter Carnival
Day Four is a great time to catch up on your sleep learn more about the history of Saranac Lake and its historic Winter Carnival.
As you may already know, Saranac Lake was a popular destination for those seeking to improve their health at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries (that’s probably a vast oversimplification).
In 1897 and 1898, a group of villagers organized and put on the first winter carnivals in Saranac Lake. They believed residents and visitors needed a diversion from the short, sometimes bleak days and long winter nights. And, when the weather was good, they wanted to encourage folks to get outside and enjoy the natural beauty and clean mountain air (probably even greater over-simplification).
As they say, the rest is history. And speaking of history, one of the many wonderful aspects of the current carnival is the History Hut which provides visitors with more details than we provide above.
