National Cheese Lover's Day

Celebrate National Cheese Lover’s Day

It’s that time of year again! National Cheese Lovers Day. It’s as gouda time as any to brie grateful for our favorite ADK cheesemakers (not to mention the endless puns we can make with cheesy words).

If you’re not familiar with the cheese producers in our area, here’s a list of our favorites to get you started. If you fancy yourself an ADK cheese connoisseur, please email us with your selections so we can get to know them, too (info@adktaste.com).

  • Nettle Meadow - one of the best cheesemakers in the ADK, they’ve won some big-time national and international awards for their cheeses. They also run a pet sanctuary and have some of the biggest hearts we know. It’s clear that happy critters make great cheese.

  • Dancing Ewe Farm — they make lovely cow and sheep’s milk cheeses on their bucolic farm near Granville, NY, where they also host amazing farm-to-table lunches and dinners in the spring, summer and fall. They import delectable olive oil and wines from small, artisanal producers in Tuscany. It’s one of our favorite places to visit.

  • Asgaard Farm — former home of American painter Rockwell Kent in Au Sable Forks, they make some of the most delectable goat cheese from their “loving, productive milking herd of primarily Alpine does with a handful of Nubians, Saanens and LaManchas in the mix.” They also offer small-batch cow’s milk cheeses from their herd.

  • Oscar’s Smokehouse — perhaps not what you were expecting to see on a list of cheesemakers, but we go hog-wild for Oscar’s smoked cheeses, spreads and especially their XXX-Sharp-7-Year-Aged Cheddar.

  • Argyle Cheese Farmer — we got to know the Argyle Cheese Farmer because they are located not far from the only dog groomer who would take our dog during the pandemic. To kill time while our little angel-baby-sent-from-heaven-above was getting groomed, we cruised the area looking for new and interesting places (Dancing Ewe farm above was not far from there, but we already knew that place). We stumbled across Argyle Cheese Farmer’s market and became fast fans of their feta, aged cheeses and cheese spreads. They also make AMAZING greek yogurt.
