February is Winter Carnival season in the ADK. We hit up Long Lake’s carnival back in January, but the action seems to really commence in February. The hamlet of Brant Lake has hosted a Winter Carnival for several years (we couldn’t find much info on the event’s history in Brant Lake — email us if you have the deets: info@adktaste.com) and they certainly know how to put on a fun-filled winter festival.
At the top of the marquee, they’ve got outhouse house races, which seem to be de rigueur for ADK winter carnivals, as is the Fry Pan Toss. Other activities include a broomball tourney, Adirondack curling, hockey shoot-offs (plural), vintage snowmobile display and parade, all-day ice skating, and sledding for the LIl’ ADKers.
Take part in human foosball. The next big thing?
We were incredibly excited to see that Human Foosball is on the list of activities. Last time we saw that was in a tiny hill town in Italy (Torgiano in Umbria, to be exact). In the center of a medieval village in a historic and famous wine-producing area of Italy, the people erected a human-size foosball table. We happened upon it one morning as we left our hotel for a day of sightseeing, and we didn’t quite believe our eyes. However, that night, when the entire town was gathered for a full card of competitions (the team of Nonnas in their 70s was fierce!), we became true believers. It makes for excellent spectating (especially with a glass of wine).
All the action is at Jimbo’s Club.
All the action takes place at Jimbo’s Club at the Point on Route 8 and right on the shores of Brant Lake. In addition to the fun activities, the Boy Scouts and Jimbo will offer refreshments for sale.
Make sure to be there at dusk for the fireworks!
